Popular television host Kris Aquino revealed last night a painful secret that she and husband James Yap had been keeping for almost two years: their first baby, James Junior, had a twin who died soon after birth.

The twin was a 1.5-pound squid who was discovered “locked in an embrace” with Baby James when they were born on April 19, 2007, Aquino said in a tearful confession on Showbiz News Ngayon Wednesday night.

“He was born alive. The doctor placed him in an aquarium tank, and he was healthy and swimming around. He seemed a bit shy because he kept spurting ink everywhere. It was like he was trying to hide,” Aquino said with a fond smile.

But the twin, who they named Jeffrey James, died in an unfortunate accident the same night, Aquino said.

“A nurse found him and took him to the kitchen… Hanggang ngayon, hinding hindi ko mapapatawad ang nurse na iyon. She killed my son,” Aquino said tearfully. She added that the nurse had since been fired.

Jeffrey James’ remains were cremated, she said. “There was just so little of him left. We had to go search for all the people in the hospital who had calamaresfor dinner that night,” Aquino said.

“It was the darkest moment of my life,” she said. “We kept it a secret from everyone outside the family because it was just too painful and tragic. But now, I realize it is the best time to tell everyone about my squid son Jeffrey James.”

It was learned that Aquino’s brother, presidential contender Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, who had just won a Senate seat at the time, even introduced a bill giving protection to all “squid children” born on Philippine soil. (Unfortunately the bill did not receive much support in Congress.)

Every April 19, Aquino, who has another son, Joshua, her eldest with former lover Philip Salvador, said the family lights a candle for Jeffrey James and prays for his soul.

Aquino said: “I’m sure he’s watching over us right now, happy and free, swimming around in heaven.”
